Democrats say Trump agrees to deal on spending, debt, Harvey aid

A Democratic aide who was briefed on the meeting told The Washington Examiner that budget discussions between GOP and Democratic leadership came to a screeching halt when the first daughter dropped by like she's the wacky neighbor on a sitcom. "Given the interplay between all the issues Congress must tackle in September, Democrats and Republicans must discuss all the issues together and come up with a bipartisan consensus", the two said in a joint statement on Sunday.

Republicans have always been anxious that Trump, who at times was a registered Democrat, would look to cut deals with the opposition party to secure victories - which he has had trouble achieving even with a Republican-led Congress.

Trump's stunning agreement to endorse a plan proposed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi came during a Wednesday morning meeting with leaders from both parties in the Oval Office, the first such meeting of Trump's presidency.

Donald Trump has ignored the objections of Republican leaders and sided with Democrats on a deal to fund the USA government and raise the debt limit for three months, in addition to providing emergency aid in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.

Congress failed to meet the March 16 statutory deadline to raise the debt ceiling and since that time the Treasury Department has taken emergency measures to prevent the government from defaulting on its obligations.

Democratic votes are needed to raise the debt limit in order to avoid default, and Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi offered Republican lawmakers and Trump their votes at the meeting.

The package would set up a tough vote for many Republicans, who want to back relief for Harvey victims but do not want to vote on legislation that raises the debt ceiling or a funding bill that but does nothing to restrict future government spending. The bill did not yet include the debt limit or government funding.

Tropical Storm Jose forms over open Atlantic
Tropical Storm Jose has formed in the open Atlantic, making it the 10th tropical storm of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. Irma is on a path that could take it over the northern Leeward Islands by tonight or early Wednesday.

In the face of this GOP opposition, the party's leaders need Democrats to support the bill. "We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred - very important - always we'll agree on debt ceiling automatically because of the importance of it".

Trump says the country has "a lot of great assets and we have some liabilities that we have to work out so we'll see if we can do that".

Trump interjected and sided with the Democrats, eventually sealing the deal with a three-month suspension of the limit, a three-month funding bill, and a package for Hurricane Harvey relief. After Pelosi and Schumer dismissed the six-month hike, Trump then agreed to the three-month increase that Democrats put on the table.

The roughly 40 Freedom Caucus members in the House would not necessarily have the power to block legislation linking Harvey relief to a debt-ceiling hike.

The proposal attaches the disaster aid to a government funding bill that would raise the United States debt limit and keep the government running through 15 December, setting up a fiscal showdown at the end of the year that Republicans had hoped to avoid.

"Today was a good day in a generally very partisan town", Schumer told reporters at the Capitol. "And they want to play politics with the debt ceiling?"

The deal comes after the House passed a stand-alone Harvey bill in a 419-3 vote on Wednesday.
