Elon Musk Releases Explosion-Filled 'Blooper Reel' of SpaceX Rocket Failures

There were some spectacular failures along the way, and SpaceX founder Elon Musk isn't afraid to relive the lows in a fascinating blooper-reel video.

It's uplifting, self-deprecating and just about the best way to spend a couple of minutes of your time.

The explosions are set to the tune used as the Monty Python theme song-each one a fiery ball of failure.

SpaceX has now managed to land a total of 16 Falcon 9 first stage orbital boosters, and it's been a while since it lost one in the attempt.

The video lists some of the reasons for the crashes, including an engine sensor failure, running out of liquid oxygen, running out of hydraulic fluid and a sticky throttle valve.

Elon Musk himself posted this to Instagram and Twitter, as the SpaceX CEO continues to celebrate the failures that lead to eventual success. "It's just a scratch".

Murdoch's Sky £11.7bn bid referred to CMA
One concern raised was that Sky "did not have adequate compliance procedures in place for the broadcast of Fox News in the UK". Sky has 22 million customers in five European markets: Italy, Germany, Austria, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Another failed landing is captioned: "Well, technically, it did land... just not in one piece".

The first successful landing of a rocket's first stage with a payload that was launched into orbit was completed in December of 2015.

In this failed attempt a landing leg collapsed during touchdown, causing the Falcon 9 booster to tip over and explode. Said by Lysander to Hermia, the line goes: "The course of true love never did run smooth". But as SpaceX's video shows, it was a hard and painful path.

Musk promised the video at the end of August and delivered on Thursday.

While the video highlights the unsuccessful attempts, that's not to say that SpaceX hasn't made any successful landings.

As of January 2017, SpaceX landing rocket missions are no longer considered "experimental". The landing of flight 23 resulted in the first stable FULL landing at sea in April of 2016.
