House passes almost $8 billion in Hurricane Harvey relief

The House of Representatives passed a Hurricane Harvey relief-funding bill nearly unanimously on Wednesday, drawing broad support from members on both sides of the aisle.

The House will vote Wednesday on a Hurricane Harvey relief bill that won't contain language aimed at preventing a U.S default on its debt.

"I think at this point there are bigger issues that we have to focus on", Meadows said in ABC's report.

In the Senate, GOP leaders want to link a long-term increase in the debt limit - until 2019 - to the Harvey aid, but that plan faces opposition from conservatives and thus will need Democratic votes.

While Republican leaders haven't said how long they plan to extend the debt limit, it was expected that it would be longer than three months. Chuck Schumer and Rep. Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday pledged their "support" to raise the debt ceiling and approve Harvey relief, with a highly political caveat. "It is a bold idea but putting together the votes seems tough". We've got another unprecedented hurricane about to hit Florida.

"The red flags that the White House waved are real", House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, said Tuesday.

Tropical Storm Jose has formed in the open Atlantic, making it the 10th tropical storm of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. Irma is on a path that could take it over the northern Leeward Islands by tonight or early Wednesday.

Congress, back from its August vacation, has less than a month to avert a default on the nation's debt and avoid a government shutdown.

These numbers, which combined amount to about $15 billion, are just for immediate spending needs after Harvey. And multiple Republicans tell CNN that with another hurricane threatening to impact Florida later this week and more detailed assessments coming in terms of the costs of recovery is Texas they expect more votes on additional disaster relief this fall. He pointed to statements from the administration in recent days arguing that the influx of FEMA disaster relief money might run short without a debt-ceiling increase. If all goes as planned, the Senate would then attach the debt-limit increase and hold a vote before the end of the week.

The Senate already had been expected to attach an increase in the debt ceiling.

McConnell, speaking to reporters after caucus lunches, acknowledged that Trump had agreed with Schumer and Pelosi on tying the short-term government spending and debt ceiling to the Harvey disaster aid, and said that he will offer that package based on the president's decision. The White House hinted at calling for an increase to be included in the disaster aid bill.

Cruz said he hoped for "strong bipartisan support ... for substantial relief from the crushing damages, and I think the best way to achieve that support is a clean relief package, not a relief bill tied to other unrelated matters".
