The Syrian army stated through SANA, the country's official news agency, that Israeli warplanes fired several rockets from Lebanon's airspace, targeting a Syrian military posts near Massyaf in the Hama countryside, killing two army personnel and causing material damage to the site.

The Syrian army says Israeli jets have attacked a site in the west of the country where Western powers suspect chemical weapons are being produced.

It warned of the "dangerous repercussions of such hostile acts on the security and stability of the region".

But in 2016, a UN-led investigative body said the Syrian government was behind at least three chemical attacks in northern Syria in the previous two years.

President Bashar Assad's government has blasted such accusations as "fabrications", and Syria's army on Thursday did not mention the SSRC in its statement on the Israeli strikes.

The attack on a Syrian military facility early Thursday morning, attributed to Israel, is a sign that Israel will enforce its major "red lines" with Syria to defend itself, a former Israeli national security adviser said Thursday.

According to multiple reports, the Israeli Military bombed what appears to be a chemical weapons facility in Syria. It was not clear if there were casualties among Iranian and Hezbollah operatives.

On Tuesday, the IDF launched its largest military exercise in 20 years in the north, simulating a war against Hezbollah.

For instance, last week, the Arabic daily Asharq Al-Awsat reported that the U.S. agreed to let Iran-backed militias take positions within 10 kilometers of Israel's border with the Syrian Golan Heights, a troubling notion for the Jewish state as it would open up yet another potential front for terrorist groups in a future conflict.

The Syrian army saw the attacks as retaliation for their recent victories. He gave no details but warned "this is something Israel can not accept".

In August, former Israeli air force chief Amir Eshel suggested that Israel had conducted a number of airstrikes on weapons convoys, which were destined for the Hezbollah over the past five years.
