JJ Abrams Will Direct 'Star Wars: Episode IX' Lucasfilm Confirms

After last week's announcement that Colin Trevorrow would no longer be directing Star Wars: Episode IX, much of the buzz centered on The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson being tapped as his replacement.

The galaxy, far, far away was shocked when it learned that director Colin Trevorrow had departed the highly anticipated sci-fi saga, Star Wars: Episode: IX.

Abrams, of course, kickstarted the modern Star Wars revival back in 2015 by directing The Force Awakens, and he will return to the franchise for this currently-untitled entry. Star Wars: The Last Jedi is due for release on December 14 in the United Kingdom and December 15 in the USA.

The Last Jedi will release on 15th December 2017, with Star Wars Episode IX slated to start filming early 2018.

The musical chairs of directors leading "Star Wars: Episode IX" has led to a change in the release dates for the movie.
