Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigns from Union Cabinet, others speculated to follow

A reshuffle of the Union Council of Ministers appeared imminent with minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigning yesterday night amid speculation that some more ministers may quit ahead of the exercise expected before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for China on Sunday. The resignation was submitted to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The others are Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh, Minister of State for Water Resources Sanjeev Balyan and Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh.

Sources said Rudy has resigned from the post of Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Skill Development Ministry.

There are several vacancies in the government while some senior ministers, including Arun Jaitley and Harsh Vardhan, are holding additional portfolios. However, the PM had asked him to wait. It could have happened on Friday as well but as President Ram Nath Kovind would be away, on a two-day visit to Tirupati, September 2 evening or September 3 morning are being seen as possible windows available to Team Modi for reshuffle. Incumbent Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu offered to quit last week in the wake of recent back-to-back train derailments that claimed around two dozen lives. However, party leaders did not rule out their exit - Mishra has crossed the unofficial 75-years limit for a Ministerial position. Party sources also said that Shah possibly discussed preparations for state polls.

The latest reshuffle will be the third after Modi came to power in 2014. HRD Minister Mahendra Nath Pandey has already been appointed as Uttar Pradesh BJP president in place of Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya. Followed by Rajiv Pratap Rudy and Junior Health Minister Faggan Singh Kulaste who were also learnt to have been summoned by Shah.

He said he would work to further strengthen the BJP in western UP.

Against this backdrop, sources said, fresh faces in the Union Council of Ministers were expected from poll-bound Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka along with some from Rajasthan, and Maharashtra among others.
