Sit-down Standup Comedy Legend Shelley Berman Dies at 92

Berman's publicist Glenn Schwartz confirmed that he died early yesterday morning due to complications from Alzheimer's Disease at his home in Bell Canyon, California (via Variety).

Following Berman's death, a post was published on his website, listing various links of organizations offering information to Alzheimer's.

Berman was born in Chicago on February 3, 1925, and trained as a serious actor before transitioning into nightclub performance. Through Martin Landau, Berman got a gig at Chicago's improvisational Compass Players group, working alongside Mike Nichols and Elaine May, where he began to develop his famous phone-call routines.

Part of the stand-up comic wave he certainly was, but in fact he would sit down when delivering his routine, which, as often as not, followed the notable "telephone conversation" style he and fellow Chicago comedians, like Bob Newhart, made their trademark. His career was full of firsts: His debut comedy album, Inside Shelley Berman, was the first non-musical record to win a Grammy award in the ceremony's history, and he was the first comedian ever to perform at Carnegie Hall. And once he had established himself as a comedian, he went on to appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show more than 20 times.

Shelley Berman, Grammy victor, Emmy-nominated actor and the first stand-up comic to perform at Carnegie Hall has passed away at the age of 92.

His other TV roles include Judge Robert Sanders on Boston Legal, as well as appearances on CSI: NY, Pushing Daisies, Hannah Montana, Entourage, Grey's Anatomy, Friends and L.A. Law. "Along the way, I read and appreciated poetry, but never really tried my hand at writing it until late in my "other" career, teaching writing in USC's Master of Professional Writing program".

Berman is survived by his wife of 70 years, Sarah - whom he met while studying acting at the Goodman Theatre - as well as his adopted daughter, Rachel Berman, and two grandsons.
