Delhi Assembly Passes Resolution Against Metro Fare Hike, DMRC Calls Emergency Meeting

A discussion on the proposed metro fare hike got off to a rocky start in the Delhi Assembly on Monday with two BJP MLAs, who sought an apology from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for using "foul language" during a recent debate on guest teachers, being marshalled out of the House.

"If the Central Government agrees, the Delhi Government would be willing to take over the DMRC".

Puri has said that the three suggestions made by Delhi CM - centre directing its nominees on DMRC to seek postponing hike, sharing 50% of operational losses, handing over DMRC operations to Delhi government are a violation of the existing law and policies and governments cannot be seen violating their own laws.

"My government is willing to bear half the grant if only a matching grant is provided by the Centre".

Citing the example of Kolkata Metro, Kejriwal said as the central government bears 100% of loss for it; bearing 50% loss in case of Delhi doesn't seem hard. "However, till that happens, let the spirit of partnership prevail and I do hope that you will and a mutually acceptable solution to the present impasse relating to the second fare hike which we clearly regard as anti-people", the letter said. "Nothing major. The case will be dealt with by the Metro Police since it is a law and order issue", an official of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) told IANS. The hike, as proposed by the Fare Fixation Committee, was supposed to be done in two phases. Mr. Kejriwal also stated that lately it was becoming evident that the relationship in owning the DMRC was not that of equal partners as the Delhi government's proposals were often summarily disposed by the Centre.

In response, Kejriwal said that his government was ready to pay Rs 1,500 crore a year, if the centre was ready to fund the other half. "Tampering with the recommendations of FFC is legally untenable", Puri said in his letter.

"The chief minister directed the chief secretary to apprise the DMRC Board about the notice for convening an emergency DMRC Board meeting, on the demand of the Delhi government", the statement said.

On Thursday, Delhi transport minister Kailash Gahlot had said that his government could revoke Delhi metro chief Mangu Singh's appointment if fares were increased on October 10, media reported. The existing fare structure is: up to 2 kms - Rs 10, 2-5 kms - Rs 15, 5-12 kms - Rs 20, 12-21 kms - Rs 30, 21-32 kms - Rs 40 and for journeys beyond 32 kms - Rs 50. Nobody otherwise would like to hike fares, DMRC spokesperson was quoted as saying.
