Father of missing girl sent outside as punishment arrested

Sherin, who has a developmental disability, vanished two weeks ago after her father, Wesley Mathews, left her outside at 3am in an alleyway - allegedly frequented by coyotes - because she didn't drink her milk.

Mathews told police he had been trying to get the girl to drink her milk in the garage and then "physically assisted" her in drinking it when she began choking. He said she was gone when he returned 15 minutes later and then, he went inside to do laundry, waiting for sunrise so he could continue searching for the little girl. Police said that he reported her disappearance about five hours later.

He was initially arrested October 7 and charged with child endangerment before posting bond and being released the next day.

Whether Sherin actually choked on milk is a matter of investigation, but it the incident has surely triggered an important debate about the need for a better mechanism to ensure people who adopt children are mentally healthy enough to take care of them. "She was coughing and her breathing slowed". Eventually he no longer felt a pulse on the child and believed she had died. The arrest came a day after the body of a small child was found in a culvert near their home in suburban Dallas.

Sherin was adopted by Wesley and his wife, Sini, from an NGO named Mother Teresa Anath Seva Sansthan in Nalanda on June 23 in 2016 after being abandoned by her biological parents. Neither office has released a statement since the body was found. Police confirmed they are working with the consulate to obtain adoption records and other documents. The couple described a special diet regimen that required her to eat whenever she was awake, in order to help her gain weight. But Perlich said the elder Mathews gave different answers to police questions than before. WFAA reported Federal Bureau of Investigation agents removed nearly 50 items from the Mathews' home including trash bags, five cell phones, three laptops, a tablet, a digital camera, tax returns, medical bills, plus a pink blanket and T-shirt.

Police are still investigating what exactly happened that night at the Mathews home, but there's a good chance this story could change again. She has reportedly not cooperated with the police since October 7. Authorities postponed the hearing until November 13.
