The Cascade Fire in Yuba and Butte counties has burned 5,000 acres and prompted multiple evacuations in the communities of Loma Rica and Browns Valley, about 20 miles northeast of Yuba City.

Mandatory evacuations were issued late Sunday after fires broke out across four counties, the Associated Press reported.

Fires in Mendocino County triggered the closure of multiple roads along the 101 Freeway.

In Napa County, firefighters were battling a 200 acre fire off Atlas Peak Road south of Lake Berryessa, Cal Fire reported.

The immediate task for emergency crews was helping people evacuate as the fires roared toward residential areas.

Residents throughout the Bay Area could smell the smoke blanketing the valley.

"There are fires burning in a handful of areas, but Napa is the primary focus because it started there first", Jourdan said. The Napa County Animal Shelter will hold smaller animals.

The National Weather Service said widespread wind gusts between 35 mph and 50 mph were observed in the north San Francisco Bay region and isolated spots hit 70 mph.

Fourteen fires are burning across eight counties, including Napa, Sonoma and Yuba. As the evacuations expand, residents are being forced to move to shelters, schools have canceled class and the Santa Rosa Police Department warned the rapidly expanding fires are a "life-threatening situation".
