They included a complete overhaul of the green-card system that would limit family-based green cards to spouses and the minor children of US citizens and lawful permanent residents as part of an effort to end what is known as "chain migration".

The requirements were released late Sunday as reforms that "must be included" in any legislation addressing the status of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival recipients, sometimes referred to as Dreamers.

However with the release of a Republican supported list from the White House, Democrats do not see these demands as a starting point for negotiation. They insist on a clean DACA bill, with other measures tabled for a separate legislation - an action that has resulted in the stalemate over the legislation for Dreamers.

The White House is also demanding the use of the "e-verify" scheme by firms to keep illegal immigrants from getting jobs, an end to people bringing their extended families into the United States, and tightening the border against thousands of children fleeing violence in Central America.

DACA comprises of about 690,000 immigrants, however, each of their permits will be reaching expiration date effective March.

Democratic leaders in Congress were quick to dismiss Trump's wish list of immigration compromises on Sunday night.

Although the future of Dreamers is unclear, Trump has given Congress six months to act. Implemented under former President Barack Obama, the initiative has allowed about 800,000 beneficiaries, known as Dreamers, to live and work in the USA on renewable authorizations. Some of the toughest proposals include removing protections for unaccompanied minor immigrants, allowing state and local police to investigate immigration status more broadly and limiting visas given to spouses and family members of immigrants who come to the United States to work to curb a pattern referred to as chain migration.

A three-pronged proposal lists initiatives under three broad categories - border security, interior enforcement and merit-based immigration series.

"We told the President at our meeting that we were open to reasonable border security measures alongside the DREAM Act, but this list goes far beyond what is reasonable", Schumer and Pelosi said in a joint statement.

"For years, this country, including Capitol Hill and the swamp, they've always asked 'what more can we do for the illegal immigrant?"

Mr. Schumer and Mrs. Pelosi, who received the immigration principles on Sunday, reacted with dismay. The two Democratic leaders had previously agreed to an immigration deal with Trump that would offer DACA protections. Now the President tells us it's the Dreamers.

Mayor Emanuel said President Trump's newly adopted hard line on protecting so-called "Dreamers" is not changing his position on Immigration Reforms.
