The number of U.S. travellers hitting the road over the Thanksgiving holiday is expected to swell to levels not seen in more than a decade, triggering what could be "record" traffic delays in some of the country's biggest cities, says the American Automobile Association.

Experts say that is an increase of about 3.2 percent over past year.

Air travel is expected to grow by 5 percent to 3.95 million trips, buoyed by the cheapest tickets since 2013, AAA said.

Previous year heading into Thanksgiving weekend, Wisconsin averaged $2.03 for a gallon of gas. Many Green Bay Packers fans may also be traveling to Pittsburgh, to see the team take on the Steelers.

Los Angeles International Airport is expected to release its Thanksgiving travel projections on Friday. Americans on average are paying $2.56 at the pump, and Virginians have seen an average increase of 30 cent across the state from a year ago. "A strong economy and labor market are generating rising incomes and higher consumer confidence, fueling a strong year for the travel industry, which will continue into the holiday season".
