Airbus to sell 430 planes to Phoenix-based Indigo for $49.5B

Announcing the deal on Wednesday (15 November), Airbus said United States investment firm Indigo Partners would be buying 430 aircraft A320s worth $49.5bn (£37.6bn) on catalogue prices, though a bulk-buy order of this size would carry discounts.

Indigo plans to supply the narrowbody jets to four airlines in which it has stakes: US carrier Frontier Airlines, Mexico's Volaris, Chilean JetSMART and Hungary's Wizz Air.

As we approach the end of the year, expect more announcements as Airbus and Boeing shore up their annual sales figures.

With the Dubai show winding down, Airbus' mega-sale made up for its disappointment earlier this week when a big sale of A380 jets to Emirates Airline failed to come together.

The deal is the 'largest single commercial announcement ever for Airbus eclipsing the 2015 deal with unrelated Indian airline IndiGo for 250 A320neo aircraft listed at $26 billion.

Boeing 777 freighters have a list price of $325.7 million.

The Indigo Partners deal is the single largest order by number of aircraft that any individual plane maker has received.

Boeing, the US aerospace company, said that FlyDubai of the United Arab Emirates has agreed to buy 175 of its 737 Max planes, along with rights to buy another 50.

Indigo Partners is a US-based private equity group that invests in airlines.

EgyptAir signed Wednesday a big deal to buy 21 Boeing and Airbus planes from U.S. AirCap corporation, EgyptAir chairman described them as "the largest deal in EgyptAir history".

FlyDubai said the planes would bring the low-priced carriers total fleet on order up to 320.

This year's air show has seen less sales than in past years.

The Dubai Airshow wraps up on Thursday.

Wednesday's historic deal represents a final grand act for Airbus's chief salesman, John Leahy, who plans to retire from the company once a successor is selected.

Emirates has taken delivery of 100 aircraft and has total order book of 142 units. That's why the deals here are mostly multi-billion dollar newsworthy ones.
