Amazon Releases International Fire TV Version to Bring Prime Video Everywhere

"This makes streaming content from apps like Prime Video fast and easy and we can't wait to hear what customers think". By offering a stripped-down Fire TV Stick for €40 - the same price as a Chromecast dongle - Amazon is no doubt hoping more folks will be motivated to subscribe to Prime or at least Prime Video.

Amazon Fire TV Stick Basic Edition is available for purchase today on local Amazon sites in Canada, France, Italy, and Spain, with Brazil and Mexico coming soon. The main difference with the Basic Edition is it doesn't come with an Alexa-compatible remote so can't take voice commands.

While that is fine, the device is strangely also available in the USA, which does have Alexa.

Over a hundred countries will receive the Amazon Fire TV stick. The stripped down Fire TV Stick doesn't work in 4K, so those users will need the $70 Fire TV dongle which is now available in Europe in the United Kingdom and Germany. The move comes nearly a year after the retailer expanded its Prime video service to over 200 countries globally. Additionally, the interface language can only be set to Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Italian, German, or English. Back in September, Amazon actually released the third generation Fire TV Stick which included support for full HD content. It supports Bluetooth 4.1 and 802.11 ac Wi-Fi, and can decode H.265 video, according to Android Police.

The new Fire TV Stick Basic Edition is basically the same as the second iteration of Amazon's streaming stick. Alexa-enabled devices aren't available yet in many parts of the world which is the reason why Amazon may have chose to not include it on the Basic Edition, as pointed out by TechCrunch.

When it comes to specs, the Amazon Fire TV Stick is equipped with HDMI connectivity, 1GB RAM, a quad-core processor, and 8GB onboard storage. It offers support for Dolby Audio and provides "great 1080p streaming", Amazon said. There's also a 4K HDR version of Fire Stick for $69 Dollars, which could eventually reach Canada at some point, too.
