AR/VR Startup Vrvana Acquired by Apple in $30m Deal

The report says Apple has been working on augmented reality headset to ship in 2020.

Apple has acquired augmented reality headset company Vrvana, according to a new report from TechCrunch. "The display technology required, as well as putting enough stuff around your face - there's huge challenges with that. The field of view, the quality of the display itself, it's not there yet".

VRvana's Totem is now tethered, but I assume Apple will solve this issue over the next few years. Two sources familiar with the deal said Apple paid around Dollars 30 million for the company. Apple didn't confirm nor deny the acquisition. This acquisition is perhaps the clearest indicator yet of what the company is hoping to develop. The Vrvana site is now still up, but it stopped updating social accounts and news in August of this year.

The headset also features "inside-out" tracking which means that cameras are used to track the user's position and surroundings while Infrared detects hand movements.

Vrvana's Totem is different from other VR devices in that it uses cameras to blend what you'd see if you weren't wearing the headset with VR imagery, making for a much more realistic experience. Then, the headset would be able to take the real world and overlay things on top of it, even seamlessly switching to virtual reality if needed. Hand tracking is one of the technologies that Apple's PrimeSense team in Israel has brought to Apple.

While Apple acquires a great number of new companies every year, a number of them have been reported lately covering Power by Proxi, InVisage, Regaind and now Vrvana.

As indicated by VRvana's, their prior headset was fit for showing completely opaque pictures on its OLED display, giving it a chance to change effortlessly from AR to VR.
