Children shot an Northern California elementary school

A series of shootings Tuesday that ended at a Northern California elementary school left at least five people dead and 10 others injured, including two children, sheriff's officials said.

Jim Schultz, a reporter for the Redding Record Searchlight newspaper, quoted Rancho Tehama resident Salvador Tello, who was taking his three children to school and described seeing the gunman open fire, killing a woman.

Tehama County Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told a TV station that the authorities are investigating at least five crime scenes at a school around 130 miles away from Sacramento.

Officers were sent to multiple scenes in the area.

Several people were wounded at the school, said Jeanine Quist, an administrative assistant with the Corning Union Elementary School District.

"He's dead. He didn't make it", the witness said.

"I put my kids down and put my truck in reverse and went out", he said.

A semi-automatic rifle and two handguns believed to be used by the gunman, who engaged police in a shootout, have been recovered, according to Johnston. The homeowner association's website says there are 2,016 lots in the community and 1,346 voting members.

"I know that we have (airlifted) a number of students", Johnston said.

At least one student was wounded at the school.

Authorities were aware of a domestic violence incident reported by neighbors that involved the suspected shooter, according to Johnston.

Area resident Brian Flint told local media that his roommate had been shot and killed by the gunman, a former convict in his 50s. He said the shooter also stole his truck. Flint says he had been shooting "hundreds of rounds" from large magazines. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything".
