Disney Confirms New "Star Wars" Trilogy With Rian Johnson

He effectively said, "Do not worry about these numbers, instead look at this" in announcing there will be an entirely new Star Wars trilogy after Disney finishes the one it's now working on.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was full of praise for Johnson, saying, "Rian will do wonderful things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy".

"The Last Jedi" isn't in theatres yet, but its director, Rian Johnson, is already getting a big vote of confidence from Disney. Johnson will be writing and directing the first installment as well.

Johnson served as writer and director of "The Last Jedi", which is set to hit theaters on December 15.

As viewers speculate what the Johnson Trilogy (as we're unofficially calling it) will be about, the timing of Lucasfilm's release is no coincidence.

When Colin Trevorrow was booted off Star Wars: Episode IX, a lot of people were surprised that Last Jedi director Rian Johnson wasn't hired as his replacement. The announcement, made by Disney chief Bob Iger on a call with investment analysts, constituted the most ambitious new foray into the "Star Wars" galaxy, moving well beyond the original nine-film framework imagined by Lucas.

Johnson, who wrote and directed The Last Jedi has so far become the studio's darling, what with him managing to make the only Star Wars film since The Force Awakens, in which a director was not fired.

In a joint statement, the director and producer say, "We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi". This year, "The Last Jedi" is expected to propel Disney to the top of the US box office for a second straight year. "Rian will do unbelievable things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy".

After impatiently counting down the days to a new Star Wars movie's release, analyzing every frame of footage in the trailers, and poring over any information they can find, the one thing that's most important to fans is the answer to the question "is the film any good?"
