Prime Minister Saad Hariri upended Lebanese politics with his surprise resignation Saturday, which he delivered from Saudi Arabia.

Earlier Saturday, al-Hariri announced his resignation while on a visit to Saudi Arabia, blaming the move on Iran and Hezbollah.

"Over the past decades, Hezbollah has used its weapons against the Lebanese and Syrians to impose a fait accompli in Lebanon", he said, reiterating his rejection of using Lebanon as a platform "to threaten the security of the region".

Citing sources close to Hariri, the Saudi-owned Asharq al-Awsat reported Sunday the Lebanese premier was informed of the plot by Western intelligence.

Hariri's resignation topples a coalition government grouping almost all of Lebanon's main political parties.

In a pointed speech, Hariri suggested that he feared for his life and said the atmosphere in Lebanon is similar to the one that existed before his father, the late prime minister Rafik Hariri, was assassinated in 2005.

Al-Hariri placed the blame squarely on Iran and Hezbollah. Hariri allies in Lebanon have denied suggestions that he had been detained. "Iran very much wants to bring chaos and destruction to the Arab world, but the evil it is sowing will return to it and attack it like a boomerang", he said.

"The resignation was a Saudi decision dictated to prime minister Saad al-Hariri and forced on him", Nasrallah said in a televised broadcast, adding that there was no domestic reason for Hariri's decision. According to the Lebanese constitution, the Prime Minister of Lebanon must be a Sunni Muslim, the President a Christian, and the chairman of the parliament a Shiite Muslim.
