Microsoft plans to rebuild its headquarters

Microsoft has announced plans to radically overhaul its existing campus in Redmond, Washington, and replace it with a bigger and more modern headquarters.

As part of the upgrade project, Microsoft's Redmond headquarters will get 18 additional buildings, as well as new sports fields, transportation investments worth $150 million, and public spaces.

Microsoft didn't put an exact price tag on the project, but said it would create 2,500 construction jobs and take five to seven years to complete. Today Microsoft has 125 buildings on our Redmond campus. A redesign and expansion a decade ago began to change that, with an emphasis on open floor plans and flexible, collaborative spaces, but the auto was still king-as evidenced by a 5,000-spot underground parking garage that underpinned the company's last big expansion, begun a decade ago. The space will be divided into what it calls "team neighborhoods".

"We want to create a campus that creates the best workplace we can envision for our employees, where they can be creative, where they can learn and collaborate with each other, where they can create technology that moves forward for our customers", explains Smith.

Microsoft has already informed the employees about the plans, and on Wednesday, the company would discuss the plans at the shareholders meeting. Overall, the campus will be designed more for pedestrians and usage of the local light rail, which will reach the campus by then based on the region's current plan. "As Microsoft continues to create the tools and services that are shaping the future of work, we can't think of a better time to modernize our campus into a model of ingenuity and innovation", explained Smith. Having been the bane of many Microsoft employee for their confusing corridors, it's unlikely they'll be missed. Microsoft says it will help in the design of energy-smart buildings.

The developer of the Spring District, by the way, is Wright Runstad, which back in 1986 built the first six X-shaped buildings that will be replaced as part of this latest renovation.
