Tennessee set to hire former Rutgers, NFL coach Greg Schiano, reports say

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer says Tennessee has contacted Buckeyes defensive coordinator Greg Schiano about its head coaching vacancy. The fact that Tennessee opted for Schiano so quickly is, though.

Tennessee fired Butch Jones on November 12 after they dropped to 0-6 in SEC play. In 2006, Schiano went 11-2 at Rutgers and won numerous national coach of the year awards.

Tennessee is set to hire a former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, just not the one many Volunteers fans had hoped they would. He directed the Scarlet Knights to six bowl games in his final seven years there. After falling out the National Football League trap door, Schiano then served time as a high school coach until getting a job under Urban Meyer. Ohio State ranked No. 3 in scoring defense last season with Schiano as co-coordinator and is No. 8 in total defense this year.

Egypt mosque attack leaves at least 85 dead, 80 wounded
A number of militants stormed Al Rawdah mosque in west Arish City during Friday prayers, and detonated an explosive device. He affirmed his confidence that Egypt is capable of winning the war against terrorism and eradicating it, a spokesman said.

Schiano worked at Penn State from 1990 to 1995, first as a graduate assistant and then as defensive backs coach.

There will be criticism of the hire, especially if the likes of Mike Norvell, now still at Memphis, were available and Tennessee passed on a younger, up-and-coming coach for Schiano.

The New Jersey native has never coached in the Southeastern Conference before. However, Mullen has been reported Sunday to be the top target of Florida, which is also looking for a new coach.
