Mueller's investigation entered a new phase this week as he revealed charges against three former Trump campaign officials: former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his longtime business partner Rick Gates, as well as foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

Sam Clovis, a former top campaign official for Donald Trump, withdrew from his nomination to an Agriculture Department post.

Clovis is a self-described skeptic of climate change. "The nomination of unqualified non-scientist Sam Clovis is a powerful illustration of the Trump administration's hostility both to science and to the rule of law". "The relentless assaults on you and your team seem to be a blood sport that only increases in intensity each day. As I am focused on your success and the success of this administration, I do not want to be a distraction or negative influence, particularly with so much important work left to do for the American people", Clovis also wrote.

The White House did not comment Wednesday night, and messages to Clovis' attorney regarding the latest developments in the Russian Federation investigation were not returned.

Papadopoulos later pleaded guilty to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about his relationship with Russian nationals. While prosecutors say Papadopoulos shared information about his Russian contacts with the campaign, they don't say whether he told superiors about the emails. Stephanopoulos presses Sekulow on the Papadopoulos allocution, which details his contacts with Russians overseas during his time in the campaign, and his efforts to set up a meeting between Trump and Putin.

The attorney general has since said that he interpreted questions from Franken and other senators to be about whether he knew of continuous, improper contacts between Trump surrogates and Russian operatives, and that he didn't.

A source familiar with the investigation said Clovis was the campaign supervisor referenced in the court records.
