Forty-nine states and Puerto Rico reported either regional or widespread flu activity during the week ending December 23, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's most recent surveillance report.

The news comes as Monterey County announced its first flu-related death of the season on Thursday; the county did not identify the deceased, but said the flu victim was an adult younger than 65. The fifth patient was an 81-year-old resident of Irving.

If you are sick, stay home from work or school until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours. But health experts at the CDC say there are other, proven ways to help fight the flu.

A release from the department sums up the symptoms to watch for as "fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, headache, muscle aches, and extreme fatigue". That's up from 84 cases reported during the previous week.

Tracking where increases are most dramatic, Cook County health officials released a map of locations showing the highest concentrations of those presenting flu-like symptoms in zip codes, which include Skokie and Morton Grove, Melrose Park and Franklin Park, Bensenville and Wooddale, Highland Park and Carpentersville.

"The number of flu cases that were reported last week is the highest in a single week that we have seen in recent years", said Sayone Thihalolipavan, MD, San Diego County's deputy public health officer.

The CDC has also discovered that this year's strain of flu is "only somewhat covered by the vaccine that was given this year", Radke said.

Dallas County health officials reiterated the importance of taking precautions to stay healthy and avoid becoming ill - including getting the flu vaccine. The CDC estimates it prevents about 5 million flu cases annually across the country and says it's not too late to get your dose.

And even if you do get the flu, a shot can hopefully make it a bit more mild.
