BJP Registers Comprehensive Win in Uttar Pradesh Civic Polls

With the BJP set to register a thumping win in the Uttar Pradesh Civic Body polls, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday gave the credit of party's resounding performance to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and its development agenda.

In the postal ballot round, the BJP did predictably well. Sunita Verma and Mohammad Furkan won the mayoral election of Meerut and Aligarh respectively.

The BJP won 10 out of 12 mayoral seats in 2012.

In Ayodhya, BJP's Rishikesh Upadhyay secured 44,642 votes and defeated his nearest rival, the SP's Gulshan Bindu, a transgender candidate, by 3,601 votes.

In Gorakhpur, the hometown of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the BJP candidate was leading and in Moradabad and Kanpur too, the ruling party candidates were in the lead. Adityanath said the BJP will now look forward to achieving the goal of one hundred per cent success in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

In Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi, which was reserved for OBC women in the civic polls, BJP's Mridula bagged 1.92 lakh votes to push Congress's Shalini (1.13 lakh) to second place.

While the party had not fielded any candidate from Amethi town, its candidates from Jais was at a poor fourth after several rounds of counting. Instead, two of the four seats around Gorakhnath temple were won by independents.

The Samajwadi Party and Congress - which fought the assembly polls in alliance - were trounced once again in the urban body elections with the BJP taking most of the seats in the nagar nigams, nagar palika parishads and nagar panchayats.

Deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma said the people of the state had shown full faith in the BJP while discarding the SP, the BSP and the Congress.

Polling was held in three phases on November 22, 26 and 29.

Some other political parties, including, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Congress and Samajwadi Party (SP) were low profile. Party sources attributed the win to efforts being put by BSP supremo Mayawati, who ever since she quit Rajya Sabha in July this year, began her visit to district headquarters every 18 of the month.

He rejected opposition's charges of EVM tampering. "They continued to support SP leader Azam Khan", said a BJP MP. The SP is closely analysing the results, he said.
