Census estimates released; Kentucky shows slight population growth

Census officials confirmed IL lost its spot as the fifth-largest state in the wake of Pennsylvania's modest population growth.

Over the past year, Idaho became the fastest-growing state in the U.S., according to national and state population estimates that were released Wednesday by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Pennsylvania remains behind California, Texas, Florida and NY in total population.

Since Texas' population was already large, the state grew just 1.4 percent over the past year.

IL was among eight states that saw their population fall, and lost more people than the seven other states that dropped. It's the fourth straight year that IL has recorded a population decline, according to the census data.

In terms of actual numbers, MA saw its population increase by around 37,000, which is good for 18 overall.

The migration figure is based on two factors, domestic and global.

From July 2016 to July 2017, almost 115,000 Illinoisans left for other states on net, according to the Census data.
