Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Sunni Waqf Board, had said in the Supreme Court yesterday that the appeals in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid case be heard in July 2019 after the completion of the next Lok Sabha polls as the atmosphere at present was not conducive for the proceedings.

Modi was referring to the lawyer Kapil Sibal's plea in the Supreme Court on Tuesday asking that the case not be heard before the 2019 elections because its outcome could have a bearing on that poll.

His contention was, however, not accepted by the court which chose to hear the matter on February 8 next year.

"The Sunni Waqf Board must be congratulated for their courageous stand on the matter and disassociating themselves from the statement of Kapil Sibal ji", the PM was quoted as saying by ANI.

"No such directive had been given by the board", Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Waqf Board Zafar Farooqui said.

"We have got nothing to do with his statement as we are not connected to any political party or do politics". This clarification comes after both PM Modi and Amit Shah attacked Kapil Sibal for trying to delay the hearing and demanded Congress party to make their stance clear. The stakeholders in the case had moved the top court after the Allahabad High Court directed the Sunni Waqf Board, the Nirmohi Akhara and the Lord Ram Lalla to settle for a three-way division of the disputed site.
