German union calls for strike Friday by Ryanair pilots

The Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) trade union confirmed all pilots directly employed by the airline are being asked to join a walk-out from 5.01am until 8.59am (local time) on Friday. "We tried to see what could still be negotiated but it wasn't much".

"This breakthrough, which was made possible by the principled resolve of Ryanair pilots, should be an encouragement to workers across the economy".

Ryanair said the strike is "unjustified" given that the sides have agreed to meet again on January 5, adding that the pilot council which attended the talks had not been elected by its own staff and contained one person who is now in litigation with the company.

"In the history of the VC, there has never been a case in which the collective bargaining autonomy has been trampled on by an employer as it is now the case with Ryanair".

"We advise all customers in Germany to turn up as normal tomorrow, as we plan to operate all scheduled flights", a Ryanair spokesman said in an email.

"We hope that our German pilots will put the needs of our customers first during Christmas week".

Last week, Ryanair was facing a threat of strikes from multiple groups of its pilots across Europe.

Ryanair has yet to comment on the VC action.

According to the German pilots' union, Ryanair offers no continued payment of wages in the event of sickness, no guaranteed work schedule, no retirement planning and a widely used system of registering pilots as self-employed.

VC said it regretted the disruption for passengers.

It went on: "Ryanair has also submitted a set of proposals on pay and conditions, procedures and dispute resolution for its Irish based pilots, and looks forward to concluding an early agreement on these issues with its Irish Ryanair pilot company council".

Ryanair pilots in Ireland represented by the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (IALPA) and IMPACT will not take industrial action against the airline after confirmation of a "historic agreement" on Thursday afternoon.

Ryanair has said that it also plans to move on to recognize flight-attendant unions in the new year.

"IMPACT will now immediately start work to make union recognition in Ryanair a practical reality by working with management to establish a formal collective bargaining agreement, and then by using this opportunity to win improved security, terms, and working conditions for the airline's pilots", Connolly added.

Unions, however, were disappointed that Ryanair did not provide assurance at talks on Tuesday. The bargaining power of employees was boosted in recent months after a rostering mixup led 20,000 flights to be scrapped.
