Google plans to launch stores in India to boost Pixel sales

Some malls where these experience zones were set up have already got inquiries from Google regarding setting up of physical stores according to the report. "They are considering it", said another person, who said the company might roll out stores in the latter part of 2018. As per the report, Google has also appointed a senior Apple executive onboard to carry out the plans more efficiently. Both Apple and Google are now including curated collections, reviews or editor picks of the most notable software for iOS or Android, respectively, making it increasingly easy to find and enjoy apps and games, so we will keep our eyes on the stats that come out on New Year's Day to gauge if app downloads set another record on the tenth anniversary year of the App Store that started it all.

Now the company only sells the Pixel smartphones online and has a minor share in the smartphone market. "They got a flavour of how physical stores are also important because you can't explain numerous features online", said a top executive at a mall where the company had a pop-up store for more than a month.

Also unknown is whether Google will open physical locations elsewhere.

Google will use the stores to sell other products as well, said one of the persons cited above. It hasn't been selling all that well in India mainly due to the strong presence of Apple, Samsung as well as Chinese players Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo and Vivo, all of which sell online as well as offline.

"We had done two stores as part of the pilot and then we could not proceed with the project as they did not meet with our desired objectives", said Dilip Modi, chief executive of Spice Connect.

It's still unclear whether Google will own and operate the stores itself, or whether it'll go the franchise route instead. Samsung branded stores are owned and operated by franchisees in India, Xiaomi's Mi Home physical outlets are owned by franchisees.

Rival Apple too is planning to setup single-branded store in India since mid-2106, but could do so, as it was facing issues with regard to government's clause for retailers to locally source at least 30% of the raw goods sold in such shops.
