Harry Kane's scoring record could be one of many

The England striker followed up his treble over Burnley on Saturday by heading in a Christian Eriksen free-kick in the 22nd minute for his 37th league goal of 2017, beating Alan Shearer's 22-year-old record for the most goals in England's top flight in a calendar year.

And it's two more than Teddy Sheringham, who Kane (96) is now one behind in terms of most Premier League goals for Spurs.

"It was hard not to think about it going into the game being level", he said.

"I've improved physically - recovery for games, getting ready for each game, eating right and ice baths", added Kane. "I think it was good to finish this way here in Wembley".

At both ends, they were missing key players but their lack of organisation and fight was embarrassing, proving far more costly than the absences of Virgil van Dijk and Charlie Austin.

He is now a striker with unyielding predatory instincts simply built to do the one job he's designed for, with his manager Mauricio Pochettino favourably comparing him to legendary Argentine centre-forward Gabriel Batistuta, who like Kane had an insatiable appetite for goals. If Kane can score when Spurs host Southampton at Wembley in Wednesday's early game, the record will be his alone - and Shearer is backing him to pull it off.

"You've had a magnificent 2017 @HKane".

67 Games he took to reach 50 Premier League away goals.

His hard work was nearly thrown away immediately as Saints showed that they were far from out of the contest, good build-up play comes to Boufal whose effort can only be parried by Hugo Lloris. "But it is fantastic for him", said Pochettino.

Kane's 56 goals in 2017 have arrived in just 52 appearances, set against 54 in 64 for Barcelona superstar Messi.

"I am aware I've equalled Alan Shearer's record", Kane said.

Kane also vowed to continue to improve every year and achieve new milestones.

Mauricio Pochettino said Kane's tally was just reward for the effort he has put into his game.

"It does not surprise us because every day we see how he works, how determined he is and how professional he is", he said.

"That can only be good for him and of course he is a talented player - that's the secret".

"Professional is a massive word - you need to include everything there inside and he is a good example of that".
