The cross-border firing by Pakistan army that killed a major and three soldiers at Keri in J&K's Rajouri sector on Saturday came towards the end of a year that saw over 780 ceasefire violations by Pakistan along the 778km Line of Control and 120 along the 198km worldwide border.

"Pakistan Army fired and targeted 120 Infantry Brigade in Battalion Area of BG when the own troops were patrolling along the LoC", he claimed.

Major Moharkar Prafulla Ambadas, aged 32 years, belonged to Bhandara district in Maharashtra and is survived by his wife Avoli Moharkar.

Indian army said that the dead include an army officer and that Indian soldiers retaliated "strongly and effectively".

According to an Army officer, the firing took place around 1215 hours. They succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. Lance Naik Gurmail Singh, aged 34 years, belonged to Amritsar, and is survived by his wife Kuljit Kaur and a daughter.

Two soldiers were seriously wounded in the firing from across the LOC. Sepoy Pargat Singh, aged 30 years, belonged to Karnal, and is survived by his wife Ramanpreet Kaur and a son.
