N. Korea says Trump `begging' for nuclear war with drills

The potential for war is increasing every day but armed conflict is not the only solution, he told a defence forum.

The DPRK test fired a new type of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) - "Hwasong 15 "- last week which it said could hit the entire territory of the United States, thus marking the completion of DPRK's rocket weaponry system, according to Pyongyang's own description of its nuclear and missile system.

North Korea said the new missile soared to an altitude of about 4,475 km (2,780 miles), more than 10 times the height of the International Space Station, and flew 950 km during its 53-minute flight - higher and longer than any North Korean missile, before landing in the sea near Japan.

The Trump administration has repeatedly said all options are on the table in dealing with North Korea's ballistic and nuclear weapons programs, including military ones, but that it still prefers a diplomatic option.

In an editorial on Sunday, North Korea's ruling party Rodong newspaper said the US-South Korea drill was "an open, all-out provocation" and that it "may lead to a nuclear war at any moment". US intelligence analysts have concluded from satellite and other data that the test missile was sacked from a fixed position, not a mobile launcher, three USA officials said.

The US in response warned that Kim Jong-un's regimen would be "utterly destroyed" if its pursuit of a long-range nuclear missile arsenal provokes a military clash. Michael Kirby, chairman of the U.N. Commission of Inquiry that drew up the report, said at the time that the crimes the team had cataloged were reminiscent of those committed by the Nazis during World War Two.

He repeated Kim's warning that the North would respond with the "highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history".

The ICBM Hwasong-15 type weaponry system used in Wednesday's test is an intercontinental ballistic rocket tipped with super-large heavy warhead capable of striking the whole mainland of the U.S., the North said.
