NFL, Commissioner Roger Goodell complete contract extension

Pro Football Talk reports that the NFL's Compensation Committee today informed all 32 owners that a new contract for Commissioner Roger Goodell has been executed.

"We are pleased to report that there is a almost unanimous consensus among the ownership in favor of signing the contract extension now", the NFL's compensation committee said in a letter obtained by FOX Business. The NFL paid Goodell almost $32 million in fiscal year 2015, the last year for which public records exist. "We are pleased to have resolved this issue and we appreciate the strong support received from our partners". An NFL spokesman declined to comment further about Goodell's finances or air travel.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had reportedly been working behind the scenes to delay or derail the process of Goodell's extension before ultimately backing down.

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora has confirmed that Goodell has been given a new deal by the NFL's Compensation Committee.

Settle in, football fans, because Roger Goodell isn't going anywhere. Jones at one point threatened to sue his fellow owners over the matter, a stance he later dropped.

With the league meeting set to basically be held in Jones' backyard, it is somewhat surprising that the Compensation Committee made a decision to execute the deal before December 13.

The NFL's revenue has spiked under Goodell, reaching an estimated record $14 billion as of 2017. Questions about the likelihood of an extension also followed the debate over NFL player protests during the national anthem earlier this year.
