Both drawings will happen before the end of the year - the last Mega Millions drawing is at 11 p.m. ET on Friday, and the final Powerball drawing of the year is at 10:59 p.m. ET on Saturday. The last chance to buy Powerball tickets is Saturday, December 20th at 7:00pm PT, and the drawing is at 9:59pm PT that night.

In October, Mega Millions changed the numbers that players could choose from, bringing the odds of picking all six numbers to 1 in 302.6 million, from 1 in 258.9 million under the old format.

The first time both games simultaneously had jackpots topping $300 million was in early August.

Chances to win either prize remain a long shot, and Mega Millions' jackpot odds got even tougher after recent changes. It also raised the price of a single ticket to $2. The new optional $3 wager Just the Jackpot allows players to receive two entries for a chance to win the game's jackpot prize only. That took the odds of winning that game from 1 in 175 million to 1 in 292 million.

Louisiana is no stranger to lotto winners, with a $191 million Powerball victor from Eunice back in October.

Powerball offers two jackpot payment options: the $384 million annuity prize paid out as one immediate payment followed by 30 annual graduated payments; or the cash option, which is approximately $294 million. That's more than they spent on movies, video games, music, sports tickets and books - combined.
