The researchers looked at data from eight years and found that the number of women who reported smoking marijuana increased over time-especially for mothers who were less than 18 years old at the time and for those who were between 18 and 24. Researchers found that marijuana consumption among pregnant women in the state has risen from 2009 to 2016 from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent. In 2016, almost a quarter of pregnant teenagers had used marijuana, as had about one in five women between 18 and 24.

Some soon-to-be-moms are turning to marijuana to quell the uncomfortable side effects of pregnancy such as morning sickness.

"Earlier broadly illustrative investigations have discovered that the commonness of cannabis use among US grown-up pregnant ladies has expanded after some time; in any case, these investigations have excluded target measures of biochemically checked pot utilize and likely think little of the commonness", said lead examine creator Kelly Young and senior creator Dr. Nancy Goler, both of Kaiser Permanente Northern California in Oakland. In aggregated 2002-2012 data, 14.6% of United States pregnant adolescents reported past-month use.

While studies on pregnant women who use marijuana have been limited, the researchers state that prenatal use of marijuana may impair fetal growth and neurodevelopment.

California was the fist state in the U.S. to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.

However, since marijuana is federally prohibited, there is little research that shows how marijuana affects fetal development during pregnancy, or its effect on women and babies during breastfeeding.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the health effects of marijuana on a fetus could include low birth weight and developmental problems, according to CNN.

And with younger women, it appears mother tokes best. As of January 1, recreational marijuana will be legal in the state for people over 21. However, on a federal level, it is still illegal to possess, use, buy, sell, or cultivate marijuana.
