The First 5G Specs Have Been Approved By 3GPP

The members of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has this week ratified the Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G New Radio (NR), which will help form the basis of the first 5G networks, based on mature 4G infrastructure. "This is an important moment and a crucial development toward making 5G NR happen", said Neville Ray, Chief Technology Officer for T-Mobile US.

A number of cities across the United States have been pegged by telecom companies to be the test sites for 5G networks.

The two companies are also competing for the installation of conduits for Olympic telecommunication networks despite the mediation of the PyeongChang Olympic Organizing Committee, and are having a war of words over technical superiority over the 5G standard which has not been set yet.

However, KT evaluated that the company was leading the way in 5G global standardization by building a communication network for a tentative 5G service at Incheon worldwide Airport and in Pangyo, Gwanghwamun, Gangnam Daero, Pyeongchang, Gangneung, Bokwang and Jinbu as official telecommunication service provider for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games.

The 3GPP has announced plans to continue developing Release 15, including by adding support for Standalone 5G NR operations. At the aforementioned Qualcomm event, the company talked about how 5G would change our lives, essentially removing the speed roadblock that prevent so many of us from getting things done while on-the-go. "We believe this is a meaningful industry collaboration bringing global 5G players together", said Jinhyo Park, EVP, Head of ICT R&D Center, SK Telecom.

"We are excited to be part of this significant milestone, and to once again be at the forefront making the 5G vision a reality in 2019", said Qualcomm Technologies executive vice president Cristiano Amon. Support for spectrum ranges below 1 GHz and up to 50 GHz are all said to be included in the specification. Following this announcement, the schedule acceleration was agreed at the 3GPP RAN Plenary Meeting in Dubrovnik, .
