Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says that America's threat to destroy North Korea should war break out is "a bloodthirsty tirade" and a big mistake.

North Korea faces tightened sanctions following its test-launch Tuesday of a new intercontinental ballistic missile.

"If war comes, make no mistake: the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed", US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said.

He added, however, that sanctions-Washington's go-to response to such situations-should not be a goal in themselves and should be used carefully to avoid worsening the humanitarian situation in North Korea.

"So part of [Russia's positioning] is to seem reasonable to South Korea and to ally with China against the US and I think they are largely seen sympathetically by other countries as well, who are quite concerned with the direction in which the U.S".
