Trump says he wants Senator Orrin Hatch to seek re-election in Utah

The former MA governor was reportedly seriously considering running for Senate in his new home state of Utah, under the condition that the state's longtime senator, Orrin Hatch, decided not to run for re-election in 2018. Mitt Romney seemed like a very real possibility.

"Whether it's confirming judges, passing tax reform or accomplishing any part of his agenda, Hatch is a key player in getting anything done", Hatch spokesman Matt Whitlock said late Sunday. Their suspicions are warranted: Trump has sounded off to friends about how he doesn't like the idea of a Senator Romney, Politico reports.

President Donald Trump is taking steps to persuade longtime U.S. Sen.

As the president visited Utah on Monday, he also was embarking on a behind-the-scenes campaign to convince Hatch not to retire, according to Politico. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, to seek for re-election in 2018 - a move which some see as an attempt to block former Massachusetts Gov.

Trump called Hatch "a very special man" on Monday.

During the 2016 presidential primary race, he labeled Trump a fraud and a phony in a University of Utah speech.

Such concern apparently exists outside the White House as well.

Romney fiercely criticized Trump during last year's campaign and came to personify the "Never Trump" movement for a time.

Just a few weeks ago, one source told the Atlantic that the plan for Hatch to retire and Romney to run was "reported to me as a 'done deal, '" and back in March Hatch called Romney the "perfect" candidate to fill his seat should he opt to step down. Rex Tillerson. Perhaps as a reaction to that particular humiliation, Romney has carried on his criticism of Trump, saying that the White House's response to the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville "caused racists to rejoice, minorities to weep, and the vast heart of America to mourn", and bashing Trump for pulling out of the Paris climate agreement.

Breitbart editor in chief and former Trump advisor Steven Bannon also is reportedly trying to keep Romney from running for Senate in his effort to keep establishment Republicans out of Washington.

"If Steve had a choice between Orrin Hatch and Mitt Romney, he would pick Hatch 10 times out of 10", the Examiner reported, citing a source close to Bannon.
