Washington, Ottawa clash in Bombardier trade fight

The U.S. Commerce Department on Wednesday finalized duties of almost 300 percent on passenger jets made by Bombardier, a win for Boeing, which lodged the complaint against its Canadian rival.

Steve Turner, Unite assistant general-secretary, said: "The US Commerce Department decision on C-Series tariffs is nakedly political and has the potential to crush jobs, not only in Northern Ireland but in the US too".

The case stems from an April 2016 sale of 75 CSeries jets to Delta Air Lines Inc.

The decision is subject to final approval by the US International Trade Commission, a quasi-judicial agency, which is due February 1, though it rarely differs from Commerce.

The Bombardier CSeries jets are narrow-body commercial aircraft for medium-range routes, a category also served by Boeing with its 737 series and Airbus with the A320 series.

"Today the U.S. Department of Commerce reaffirmed the magnitude to which Bombardier has been subsidized by government funds and the extent to which it dumped C Series aircraft in the United States, selling those aircraft at prices millions below production cost in an illegal effort to grab market share in the U.S. single-aisle airplane market", the firm said in a statement.

Canada's ambassador to the United States, David MacNaughton, warned that a positive finding of material harm to Boeing by the ITC could represent a possible violation of World Trade Organization agreements and prompt a more formal complaint with the global trade group.

Egypt minister set to signal deal to renew Russian flights
Moscow suspended air service with Cairo in November 2015 following a terrorist attack on board a Russian A321 passenger jet that was en route from Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh to Russia's St.

"Unfortunately, the Commerce Department decision is divorced from this reality and ignores long-standing business practices in the aerospace industry, including launch pricing and the financing of multi-billion dollar aircraft programs", said Mike Nadolski, Bombardier's vice president of communications and public affairs.

If Bombardier wins, Chicago-based Boeing says its smallest 737 model could face unfair competition from the CSeries for decades.

The inquiry now moves to the United States global trade commission, which will examine if the dumping and subsidies caused injury to Boeing.

Delta is expected to wait for that new plant to open before taking delivery of their order.

With the new judgement passed on Wednesday, the USA chose to find in favor of Boeing. He says nothing justifies such duties.

But Boeing's trade war with Bombardier has come with a price. The U.S. decision means that the relations between the country and its neighbor, Canada are likely to be terribly strained.

Bombardier criticised the near-300% duties, saying its plan of partnering with the European company Airbus to launch the CSeries assembly from a production line in Mobile, Alabama, would make it an American company.
