Apple says iOS is vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre issues

The more pervasive flaw, dubbed Spectre, leaves the world's supply of microprocessors potentially vulnerable to attack, the researchers said.

The other flaw, Spectre, affects most processors now in use, though the researchers believe this flaw is more hard to exploit. "As it is not easy to fix, it will haunt us for quite some time", the researchers said, explaining why they chose to call the flaw Spectre. Researchers say one of the bugs, called Meltdown, affects almost every processor it's made since the mid-1990s.

The lawsuits also allege that the patches to fix the vulnerabilities will cause computers to operate more slowly. Intel said Wednesday that it has already provided some firmware updates to system manufacturers. "Intel is committed to responsible disclosure". Microsoft also released a patch and security advisory for Windows, but noted that there is an issue with some "incompatible anti-virus applications" that could leave devices unable to boot and has not pushed the patch to systems with known AV issues.

Intel has disputed that claim, saying in a statement, "Contrary to some reports, any performance impacts are workload-dependent, and, for the average computer user, should not be significant and will be mitigated over time".

There's no evidence that bad actors have yet exploited the bugs, but companies from Microsoft to Mozilla said this week they have worked to patch up vulnerabilities to their operating systems and browsers to protect against one of the bugs.

Titans' DeMarco Murray (knee) officially ruled out for Wild Card Round
Henry is set to be the lead back again this weekend as the Titans have again ruled DeMarco Murray out with a knee injury. He has thrown the deep ball more this year, but the best thing the Titans could do is make Smith beat you with his arm.

Pranksters post fake 'sanctuary state' signs on California border
On Tuesday, Homan said that transnational drug cartels "are using this sanctuary state law as a selling point". Moreover, he argued Brown should be criminally charged over the law.

North Korea Winter Olympics talks set for Tuesday
The Trump administration has remained guarded on the prospect of unilateral talks between North and South. Mr Trump took credit for brokering the talks on Twitter, however.

Apple had a partial fix for the problem and is expected to have an additional update. Further updates of iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS will be released to limit the threat of the vulnerabilities, Apple said. Amazon Web Services (AWS), the largest seller of cloud computing services, said in a statement it does not "expect meaningful performance impact for most customer workloads".

"If you download the latest update from Microsoft, Apple, or Linux, then the problem is fixed for you and you don't have to worry", security researcher Rob Graham said in a blog post Thursday. Intel may be on the hook for costs stemming from lawsuits claiming that the patches would slow computers and effectively force consumers to buy new hardware, and big customers will likely seek compensation from Intel for any software or hardware fixes they make, security experts said. In the coming days we plan to release mitigations in Safari to help defend against Spectre.

Meltdown and Spectre exploit critical vulnerabilities in modern processors. It said that it had already protected almost all instances of AWS and that customers must update their own software running atop the service as well.

On Thursday, Intel's stock closed down 1.8 percent to $44.43 a share.

After the CPU security issue that was revealed to affect Intel, AMD, and ARM processors this week, it might sound logical for the companies involved to take a financial hit.
