AT&T urged to cut Huawei ties by U.S. officials over national security

United States lawmakers have long anxious about the security risks posed the alleged ties between Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE and the country's government.

Two Republican lawmakers, Michael Conaway and Liz Cheney, unveiled a bill this week that bars the U.S. government from using or contracting with Huawei or ZTE.

Lawmakers are advising American companies that if they have ties to Huawei or China Mobile, it could hamper their ability to do business with the USA government, a source was quoted as saying.

Will U.S. citizens get their first 5G phones from Huawei or ZTE? It's unclear whether or how much AT&T was collaborating with Huawei on 5G; the company was reportedly working with Qualcomm and Ericsson prior to announcing its end of 2018 5G network plans, but could easily have had other partners. But the 2011 Congressional report doesn't cite direct evidence that the company is compromised, instead saying that Huawei has failed to provide evidence that would "satisfy any fair and full investigation", and Huawei has consistently denied allegations of collusion with the Chinese government. The government also wants Cricket, an AT&T subsidiary, to stop selling Huawei-branded smartphones.

Unofficially, though, Reuters reports that Congress lobbying resulted in AT&T being "forced to scrap" the business arrangement.

Huawei has battled accusations that it poses a USA national security threat for several years, while Chinese company ZTE has also come under fire for its global practices.

"We hope that China and the United States can work hard together to maintain the healthy and stable development of trade and business ties".

USA lawmakers are now reportedly putting pressure on AT&T to drop Huawei support altogether, according to Reuters.

According to Reuters, US authorities are anxious that the wireless carrier's increasingly close ties with the Chinese company - founded in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, a former engineer in the People's Liberation Army - claiming that it poses "national security concerns".

"The next wave of wireless communication has enormous economic and national security implications", said Michael Wessel, a member of the congressionally-established U.S.

China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile phone operator, did not respond to requests for comment.

It is now being reported that the U.S. government wants AT&T to cut all commercial ties with AT&T, including any work the two have made on the development of 5G standards.

In 2012, it investigated Huawei and ZTE over claims that they posed a threat to critical infrastructure.
