Bannon: 'I regret' delay in responding to book

In the days following the release of Michael Wolff's explosive bookFire and Fury - Inside the Trump White House, former chief strategist Steve Bannon is trying to make amends to U.S. President Donald Trump and his family, Axios reports.

"Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart", Mr Trump tweeted from Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, a few hours before a strategy session on the 2018 legislative agenda with Republican congressional leaders and Cabinet members.

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr. has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency", Bannon concluded.

British Prime Minister Theresa May has dismissed concerns about Donald Trump's mental fitness, saying the US president acts in what he sees as the best interests of his country.

Trump said he had gone from being a successful businessman to TV star to president of the US.

"The one description that everyone gave, everyone has in common - they all say 'he is like a child.' And what they mean by that he has a need for immediate gratification".

"Only because I went to the best colleges, or college".

Fox said that Ms. Trump and Mr. Kushner's "seemingly preternatural ability to compartmentalize" has thickened their skins against the barbs aimed at them in Wolff's book.

On Sunday, Trump again attacked Wolff and his assertions, invoking former President Ronald Reagan, who battled questions about dementia in the final years of his eight-year term.

White House officials and Trump's high-profile supporters have launched an effort to raise doubts about Wolff's credibility.

US President Donald Trump says his track record shows he is "a very stable genius".

The book also quotes Bannon and other prominent advisers as questioning the president's competence.

Theresa Maywas asked about accusations in a new book that he is mentally unfit for office. The White House has called the publication "fiction". I guess sloppy Steve brought him in the White House quite a bit and it was one of those things. "It's in his imagination", Trump said Saturday.

The book describes a Trump team shocked by their own win on election night, White House staffers saying Mr Trump's "mental powers were slipping", and senior administration officials calling Mr Trump an "idiot".

Reagan died in 2004, aged 93, from pneumonia complicated by the Alzheimer's disease that had progressively clouded his mind.

Donald Trump too has continued to fight back against the book.
