DJI launches Osmo Mobile 2 gimbal for mobile videography

DJI may have made a name for itself with drones, but for many photographers its the company's stabilizing gimbals that are essential, and now there's an even cheaper option.

DJI has also updated its line of Ronin stabilizers for professional cinematographers.

DJI introduced both the Osmo Mobile 2 and Ronin-S at CES in Las Vegas this week.

The new DJI Osmo Mobile 2 is created to turn any mobile phone smart steady cams. Well, the first-gen Osmo too supported Portrait Mode, however, you had to hold the stabilizer sideways which can turn out to be annoying for many. The Osmo Mobile 2 is the company's next-gen camera stabiliser for smartphones.

The Osmo Mobile 2 also gets better integrated settings in the DJI GO mobile app including access to ISO, shutter speed and more. Hyperlapse blends timelapses with camera motion, and there are Panorama, Long Exposure, and LightTrail modes.

Utilizing high-torque motors, the DJI Ronin-S is ready to support cameras as large as the Canon 5D Mark V plus any massive, extending zoom lenses you throw at it. The original allowed for 4.5 hours of use on each charge, while the Osmo Mobile 2 is said to be good for up to 15 hours of filming. Like its predecessor, the Osmo Mobile 2 uses a three-axis gimbal with SmoothTrack technology to detect and compensate for your movement of the camera. If you prefer to shoot with a DSLR or mirrorless camera, DJI has also announced its first single-handed stabiliser for DSLR and Mirrorless Cameras, the Ronin-S.

Flagship smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6, and Google Pixel 2 all offer impressive built-in optical image stabilisation, but if you want to capture truly cinematic footage, nothing beats using a dedicated gimbal. High-torque motors help the gimbal support numerous most popular cameras, including the Canon 5D, Panasonic GH, and Sony Alpha.

A new Push mode lets users adjust the pan and tilt axis by hand while the Ronin-S is powered on. The curved design is meant to leave access to the preview screen even while shooting at angles, and the battery can be hot-swapped. DJI will also be releasing a dual-handle support for when you need extra comfort and stability.

The DJI Ronin-S will be available in the second quarter of 2018 from DJI's website and authorized retailers. DJI also showed us an early preview of an upcoming Focus Control Center consisting of a focusing dial and a screen, allowing users to really control their entire camera while its mounted on this support system.
