As NBC News reports, Trump was "furious" watching footage of Comey on an Federal Bureau of Investigation plane the day after the president fired him and called McCabe demanding to know why the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director was allowed to take a government plane.

Following news in December of his imminent retirement, Trump tweeted, "FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retier will full benefits".

An FBI spokeswoman declined to comment on McCabe.

He took over as acting director following Trump's May 9 firing of Comey and was among the officials interviewed for the position, which ultimately went to former Justice Department official Christopher Wray.

"The news that FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is stepping down is a step forward". The news follows reports last week that President Donald Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions pressured FBI Director Chris Wray to fire McCabe.

The FBI's inspector general launched a probe past year into whether McCabe had any conflicts of interest in the Clinton investigation.

Trump has blamed McCabe for influencing the decision not to criminally charge Clinton for her use of a private email server.

"The president was not part of this decision-making process", she said.

In recent weeks, McCabe has been questioned by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, the House Judiciary Committee and the House Intelligence Committee.

During the call, Trump suggested that McCabe ask his wife how it feels to be a loser, in an apparent reference to her failed campaign for office, according to NBC. Later that day, The Washington Post reported that during a meeting in the Oval Office Trump once asked McCabe how he voted.

Trump in December referred to the FBI's reputation as being in "tatters", and has also publicly criticized U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions for recusing himself from the Russian Federation probe, a move that paved the way for Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to appoint Mueller after Comey's firing.

Republicans have noted that McCabe's wife previously ran for a seat in Virginia's state Senate and received donations from then-Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of Hillary and Bill Clinton, the former president.
