Ford reveals facelifted Ranger in USA guise

It went away in 2011 but now it's back.

The Ford Ranger is back and better than before.

The new-for-2018 Ford Ranger looks largely unchanged from the model already on sale in Australia - the body is the same since launch seven years ago.

The North American 2019 Ford Ranger also gets its own solid-steel front bumper, front-mounted tow hooks, a new double-bulge aluminum hood, and on the FX4 trim level, an "aluminum bash plate", as truck design chief and native Australian Max Wolff puts it. In an attempt to snag some of the glory, Ford has crafted a midsize truck using a tried and true formula: F-150.

Fully reengineered for the United States, Ranger will be built in MI with a 2.3-liter turbocharged four cylinder engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. This twin-scroll turbocharged engine is created to be efficient and durable with a forged-steel crankshaft, connecting rods, and chain-driven dual overhead cams.

"Ranger's proven 2.3-liter EcoBoost provides a torquetarget on par with competing V6 engines, but with the efficiency of a four-cylinder", Thai-Tang said.

The Ranger will also have a 10-speed transmission, a fuel-saving feature that Ford is adding to many of its vehicles.

Where Iowa basketball's comeback at IL ranks in school history
Iowa made its first 17 free throws in the game; Bohannon and Garza had flawless nights, going 10-for-10 and 9-for-9, respectively. The Illini are 0-4 in league play, the Hawkeyes are 0-5. "We were down 20 in the first half, but we weren't down 20 at halftime.

The US Ranger comes in entry-level XL, mid-level XLT and high-level Lariat trim series with available Chrome and Sport appearance and FX Off-Road packages, and in SuperCab or SuperCrew cab configurations. In addition, there was only so much that Ford could do when it came to outfitting the truck with enough tech to meet more stringent safety and emissions standards. Customers who move up to the XLT and Lariat models will get lane departure warning, active lane control, rear park assist, and blind-spot monitors that also extend to any trailer the Ranger is towing. Buyers will be able to connect to a 4G LTE link that will provide in-vehicle wi-fi for up to 10 devices through FordPass Connect, and choose a premium Bang & Olufsen Play audio system. The interior features and trim incline toward durability, not luxury.

One of the largest crossovers from the F-150 can be seen in Ford's attention to how many people nowadays hit the dirt with their truck. It includes four distinct drive modes - normal; grass, gravel and snow; mud and ruts; and sand.

Mechanically, though, the MY19 Ranger you see here is specific to the U.S. market, most obviously proven by the lack of a diesel.

Something new in the FX4 package is Ford's all-new Trail Control technology. This new technology is like cruise control for off-roading at low speeds. It sends power and braking to each wheel so the driver can instead focus on steering. An electronic-locking rear axle is available (standard on FX2 and FX4) for increased all-terrain traction.

In addition to the suburban Detroit plant that builds Rangers for US sales, Ford produces the truck in Thailand Argentina and South Africa.

It should be noted up front that the new Ranger is most definitely a mid-size pickup, much larger than the old compact Ranger we knew, and it's almost the same size as a mid-1990s Ford F-150.
