In 1947, 17-year-old Walter Goldbach designed the first rendition of Chief Wahoo, which was commissioned by then-Indians owner Bill Veeck, the Plain Dealer reported.

The controversial "Chief Wahoo" logo will no longer appear on the Cleveland Indians' uniforms from the start of the 2019 season. The logo has been an incredibly divisive topic in Cleveland in recent years, with many clinging to it out of nostalgia and local campaigns calling for the team to keep the logo despite protests. That concession will allow the team to retain its trademark to the logo.

Major League Baseball announced Monday that the polarizing Native American mascot is coming off Cleveland's jersey sleeves and caps after the upcoming season, a decision that was made mutually between the league and the team.

(It replaced a far more offensive illustration, if you can believe it.) The look of Chief Wahoo underwent some revisions in the following decades, but for the most part the cartoon became the face of Cleveland's baseball team.

Baseball commissioner Robert Manfred said in a statement that the league had held "constructive conversations" with the team about the logo over the past year, and that the team "ultimately agreed" to remove the logo from on-field uniforms.

Dolan said he was "cognizant and sensitive" to opinions on both sides of the discussion, adding that he was "ultimately in agreement" to remove the logo beginning in 2019. Last year, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in another case made it clear that the Redskins name can not be stripped of trademark protection just because some find it offensive. David Waldstein of the New York Times also reported that the logo will not appear on signs or banners at their ballpark, Progressive Field. The Indians will continue to wear the Wahoo logo in 2018, and even after it is gone from the uniform, the club will still sell merchandise featuring the mascot in the Cleveland area.

The NFL's Washington Redskins have faced longstanding pressure to change their team name, which critics cite as offensive to Native Americans. "It doesn't make any sense to me, unless they want to continue to make what's basically blood money".

The Chief Wahoo symbol, however, was still stitched onto their uniforms. That court case was dismissed by a judge.

The logo has been used less and less over the years, but 2019 - a year in which the Indians will host the MLB All-Star Game - will see it be fully eliminated from the field and other items used by the players.
