Packers fire Dom Capers, longtime defensive coordinator

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, the Packers are letting go of defensive line coach Mike Trgovac and inside linebacker coach Scott McCurley.

Before joining the Packers, he spent two seasons with the Miami Dolphins, including one as a defensive coordinator.

Despite the Packers focusing many of their early-round draft picks on defense for a number of years, we haven't seen many improvements on this side of the ball.

But the Packers will always have 2010, when his defense would help them win a Super Bowl.

The 67-year-old Capers said last month that he planned to coach "as long as I enjoy it". The defense ranked 22nd in the league this past season, giving up an average of 24 points a game. They're also firing some of his assistant coaches.

The last time the Packers had a losing record, McCarthy fired Bob Sanders as DC after the 2008 campaign and brought Capers on board, a seasoned coach who coordinated several teams and was a head coach in both Carolina and Houston. He also was the secondary coach for the New England Patriots in the season before joining the Packers.

Capers served as Green Bay's defensive coordinator for nine years, dating back to 2009.

If Green Bay opts to go outside the organization, the Journal-Sentinel reported that candidates may be Chicago defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Gregg Williams of the Cleveland Browns and Steve Spagnuolo, who served as interim head coach of the New York Giants after Ben McAdoo was sacked.
