Paul Manafort sues special counsel Robert Mueller, DOJ

Aside from Trump's Twitter criticism of the Russian Federation probe, Manafort's lawsuit appeared to be the most serious attack to date on Mueller's investigation.

On Wednesday, Jan. 3, The New York Times reported that Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, sued Mueller and requested a federal court to restrict the special counsel's authority.

When Rosenstein appointed Mueller, he authorized the special counsel to investigate "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation".

Manafort was indicted in October on charges related to his lobbying work on behalf of a Russia-friendly Ukrainian political party.

Manafort is now one of four people facing charges stemming from the Mueller probe.

Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Manafort is calling for the court to declare Mueller's appointment "invalid" and for the "setting aside" of all of Mueller's actions as special counsel.
