The Turkish Foreign Ministry has reportedly told citizens that they could possibly face arbitrary arrests in the US.

"Turkish citizens traveling to the United States may be subjected to arbitrary detentions based on testimonies of unrespected sources", Reuters cited the ministry as saying.

Turkey has warned its citizens about traveling to the United States, in retaliation for a new USA travel advisory about Turkey.

A statement by the Turkish foreign ministry - using nearly identical language to the original U.S. advisory - warns of an increase in terrorism and "risk of arbitry detention" in America.

It added that the New York City subway pipe bomb attack in December was "an example of far-right/racist incidents".

The Turkish government is angry at the US refusal to extradite Fethullah Gulen, a cleric it blames for a coup attempt in 2016.

In return, the Turkish foreign ministry said Turkish public sector employees in the United States had been detained on "baseless allegations". There are also tensions over charges against several Turks accused of helping a Turkish-Iranian gold trader evade USA sanctions on Iran, and US support for Kurdish groups in Syria that Turkey considers to be terrorist organizations.
