UFC 220: Stipe Miocic sets heavyweight title defense record with dominant win

It wasn't that great a shock that Stipe Miocic defeated Francis Ngannou on Saturday in the main event of UFC 220 at TD Garden in Boston to retain the heavyweight title.

Still, it's these cards, the ones that fly under the radar, that deliver. It was the first time Miocic went five rounds in a title fight, and only the third time in his career that he had gone past the fourth. And speaking of history, Miocic became the first heavyweight champ to defend his title three times in the UFC's history.

Despite winning his last five fights - including four first-round finishes and two title defences - Miocic (18-2) entered this one as the underdog against his much-hyped opponent, who has taken the heavyweight division by storm since his December 2015 debut.

Cormier raised his hands in triumph as UFC President Dana White wrapped the title belt around his waist.

"I'm not the scariest, but I'm the baddest man in the world", Miocic said, deadpan, in the cage after the fight. It could be the best main and co-main events of 2018 due to the uncertainty of whether Conor McGregor and Georges St-Pierre return, how long Jon Jones will be suspended following his latest drug test failure and Ronda Rousey venturing off to the WWE.

"I proved that I am worthy of being called champion". But Cormier pinned Oezdemir against the canvas early in the second and finished him off with a series of punches to the face. With 90 seconds left, Cormier stung Oezdemir and appeared to have him hurt, but the Switzerland native, whose right eye was now marked up, fired back.
