George W. Bush says Russian Federation meddled in 2016 USA presidential poll

While never mentioning President Donald Trump by name, Bush appeared to be pushing back on Trump's decisions on immigration, as well as his attempts at warmer relations with Russian Federation.

The White House has made no immediate comments in response to this criticism.

While Bush did not mention Donald Trump's name, his comments are a contradiction to President Trump's denial of Russian Federation affecting the outcome of the election.

"Whether they affected the outcome (of the election) is another question, but they meddled, and that's unsafe for democracy", Bush continued. "Our democracy is only as good as people trust the results".

President Donald Trump, whom the Russians tried to help get elected, has frequently hedged on whether he thinks Russia interfered on his behalf.

There are numerous investigations underway to determine whether the Trump campaign assisted the Kremlin in its efforts.

Bush called Russian President Vladimir Putin "zero-sum" at the summit.

Bush suggested that Putin is trying to restore the Soviet empire.

"The reason he does is because of the demise of the Soviet Union troubles him", Bush said, according to the AP.

Bush insisted on the need to support North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and other U.S. alliances with other countries.

The former president believes Putin's aggressive stance, where he "is pushing, constantly pushing, probing weaknesses", makes North Atlantic Treaty Organisation as relevant to world security as it ever has been. "That's why North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is very important".

Though Bush has avoided explicitly criticizing the Trump administration, he has voiced veiled opposition toward the president's "America First" platform.

Bush also said that the United States needs to reform its immigration law.

"But there are people willing to do jobs Americans aren't willing to do. But there are people who want to put food on their family's table and are willing to do that". We ought to say thank you and welcome, " Bush said.
