Opposition: Netanyahu 'acting like a criminal' in attack on police chief

Israeli police chiefs will recommend to the country's attorney general that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu be indicted on corruption charges, according to reports in local media. The police are expected to punt the issue to state prosecution.

A poll in December by Hadashot TV news found 63 percent of Israelis believe Netanyahu should resign if "police recommended an indictment for charges of fraud or breach of trust".

Police have not made comments on a possible indictment on the third case as investigation seems to still be underway. Neither set of recommendations ripened into charges, with attorneys general citing insufficient evidence to indict.

Netanyahu's decision came on Sunday night in a cabinet meeting with the nation's ministers of agriculture, health, and finance.

On Wednesday Police Commissioner Roni Alsheikh met with other top brass Israeli police chiefs to discuss Netanyahu's cases as they near consensus to formally indict the Prime Minister. "These are professionals who know what they are doing", Alshich said in the interview.

"Many of you are asking: what will happen?". "I want to calm everyone down: There will be nothing because there is no case". But Netanyahu would face a devoted opposition which will likely demand his resignation or call for a nationwide referendum to determine whether or not the Prime Minister is fit to serve the remainder of his term. "The state prosecutor recently said in the Knesset that about half of the police's recommendations end with nothing", Netanyahu said Wednesday.

Mr Mandelblit is expected to take a number of weeks to decide how to proceed once he has received the police's recommendations. "But I am positive that at the end of the day the authorities will agree with me - that there is no case".

Netanyahu's time as premier is fast approaching Israel's revered founding father David Ben-Gurion's 13 years, and he has shown himself to be a shrewd politician.

Yesh Atid chairman Yair Lapid said Netanyahu's attack on Alsheich was "a desperate attempt of a suspect to use his elevated status to threaten the rule of law and to vilify the police who protect all of us". Netanyahu is shaming the police chief, and this is unfair.
